What Is the Source of Bad Breath?

Bad breath is generally divided into two types, pathological and physiological.

Physiological Halitosis

The causes of this type of bad breath are the digestive process of some foods in the stomach or a well-cleaned oral cavity, improper dental restorations, rotten teeth, gum problems, and cigarette consumption. Because it is not systematic, it is temporary and can be controlled with solutions along with brushing your teeth. For the prevention of the condition, brushing the back of the tongue and using mouthwash with zinc content, chewing gum is a good solution, provided that it is not continuous.

Pathological Bad Breath

People who have this type of bad breath are not aware of the bad smell or tolerate and endure it. Although 80-90% of bad breath is caused by in-mouth causes, it can also be caused by many out-of-mouth causes. To give an example of the causes of halitosis, oral, bruises and inflamed teeth, gum diseases, the language layer, food scraps, mouth sores, dirty teeth, a reduction in the amount of saliva a few of them. Disorders in the functions of the salivary gland can also cause bad breath, as well as antidepressant, antipsychotic and narcotic drugs can cause a lack of saliva. 80-90% of pathological halitoses are caused by the mouth, 10-20% are caused by the outside of the mouth.

What is the Measurement of Halitosis?

The measurement of halitosis is carried out with a halitosis measuring device called a halitometer. It helps in the planning of bad breath and in determining whether success is achieved after treatment. In our hospital, the presence and severity of bad breath are determined by making individual measurements with a halitosis measuring device.
Elements to be considered before measuring halitosis;

Eating at least 8 hours before

  • Have drunk water at least 3 hours before
  • Avoid foods and drinks that smell at least 2 days in advance
  • Do not use spray or mouthwash products
  • Do not use fragrances such as cologne, perfume at least 1 day in advance
  •  If he is taking antibiotics, he should stop taking them 3 days in advance

Our patients who will be measured in our hospital; First, a panoramic film is taken, anamnesis is taken, and halitosis is measured. Along with the results obtained, the source of bad breath is investigated with a detailed examination. All necessary treatments are started on the same day in order to eliminate the problems caused by the patient’s oral and dental health. 15 Days after the end of the treatment, the patient is given a control appointment and a breath control measurement is performed. In order to eliminate odors that originate outside the mouth, the patient is referred to the appropriate branch.
